During our stay at the DoubleTree by Hilton Bangkok, we booked a relaxing Sunday morning couples treatment at Makkha Health & Spa Bangkok, an independent in hotel spa located on the 7th floor, alongside the hotel’s pool and gym facilities.

Makkha Health & Spa is a great option if you’re looking for a high quality Bangkok spa experience without leaving your hotel. With professional therapists, a calm atmosphere, and well priced treatments, it offers a welcome escape from the busy streets of Bangkok.

Where Is Makkha Health & Spa in Bangkok?

The independent spa is conveniently located within the DoubleTree by Hilton Bangkok, Ploenchit on the 7th floor of the hotel. This makes it ideal for travellers wanting a seamless spa experience without factoring in travel time or traffic.

Booking a Spa Treatment at Makkha Health & Spa Bangkok

We booked my treatments the day before directly at the spa reception, and the process was quick and easy. Availability was good, even for a weekend morning slot, which is always a bonus. They are open 7 days a week 10am until midnight.

Spa Arrival, Consultation & Scent Selection

We arrived at 10:00am and were warmly welcomed by the receptionist, who confirmed our chosen treatments:
a 60 minute full body scrub followed by a 60 minute Thai herbal ball massage, plus a 60 minute full body Thai massage and 60 minute Thai herbal ball massage.

We were invited to sit and served tea, a rice cake, and a refreshing cold towel, creating a calm and welcoming start to the experience. After completing a consultation form, I was able to select my preferred scrub scent. The available options included lavender, orange & cinnamon, citronella, jasmine, and rose.

Most of the scents were quite strong. As I generally prefer more subtle or blended aromas, I chose rose, which was noticeably softer than the others. Payment for the treatment was taken in advance, which we paid by card.

Foot Cleansing & Preparation Before the Treatment

A therapist then escorted us to the treatment area, exchanging our shoes for very comfortable pairs of sliders. We were first seated in a small room where our feet were washed, lightly scrubbed, and dried, a lovely pre-treatment ritual that immediately helped us relax.

We were then shown to the treatment room, which was dimly lit, immaculately clean, and beautifully prepared with crisp linens. The therapist was friendly, smiley, and professional, instantly putting me at ease.

The room included a private shower area and space for clothes. We were provided with disposable pants and, for the scrub, a disposable shower cap, plus loose clothing for the Thai massage.

Rose Salt Full Body Scrub – 60 Minutes

The treatment began with a rose salt full body scrub, and it was excellent. The therapist was thorough and confident, exfoliating every area from top to toe, including the chest and glutes.

Note: This treatment involves exposure of the upper torso. If you are body conscious or prefer more modest treatments, this is worth considering. However, the consultation form allows you to specify areas you’d prefer the therapist to avoid.

Once the scrub was complete, I was invited to rinse in the warm shower. The curtains were closed for privacy, and I was given plenty of time to rinse, dry, and change into fresh disposable pants before the next treatment.

Traditional Thai Herbal Ball Massage – 60 Minutes

This is a treatment I’m actually qualified to offer myself, though interestingly it was never particularly popular when I offered it in the UK.

The massage began with deep pressure point work while I lay prone, fully covered by sheets. The therapist used her body weight and controlled movements to apply firm, focused pressure across the main muscle groups. After three busy days in Bangkok and over 34km of walking, this felt incredible.

Next came the warmed herbal compresses, first applied over the sheet and then directly onto the skin. The combination of heat, aroma, and pressure was deeply relaxing and soothing. Every area of the body was worked thoroughly and intuitively.

The treatment finished with some gentle seated stretches for the back, arms, and neck. An excellent way to end the session.

Full Body Thai Massage – 60 Minutes

Mark was provided with loose fitting clothing to wear for the Thai massage, as this treatment involves a lot of assisted stretching and body manipulation. Unlike oil based massage, Thai massage is performed fully clothed and with the therapist working on the massage table, using their hands, forearms, elbows, knees, and body weight to apply firm, controlled pressure.

The therapist guided Mark through a series of deep stretches and movements, similar to passive yoga, helping to mobilise the joints, lengthen tight muscles, and release built up tension. Rhythmic pressure was applied along the body, with kneeling positions and steady compressions used on larger muscle groups. The combination of stretching, compression, and sustained pressure made the treatment both energising and deeply relieving, particularly effective after our long day of walking.

Mark’s therapist was excellent and checked in regularly to ensure his comfort throughout the treatment. However, a couple of days after the massage, Mark did experience some soreness in his left calf muscle. This is not uncommon after a deep, intensive Thai massage, particularly when strong pressure and stretching techniques are used, and can be similar to delayed muscle soreness after exercise.

Note: It’s essential to clearly communicate your pressure preferences before and during a Thai massage. Traditional Thai massage typically uses firm to very deep pressure, combined with stretching and compression techniques. For those not accustomed to this style, the intensity can feel overwhelming or even painful at times.

The therapists are highly skilled and can easily adjust pressure and techniques to suit your comfort level, so don’t hesitate to speak up. Thai massage should feel therapeutic and effective, not something you need to endure. Open communication will ensure the treatment is both safe and enjoyable, especially if you’re new to this style of massage or prefer lighter pressure.

Tea, Mango Sticky Rice & Relaxation Area

After the treatment, we were given time to change and then shown to the relaxation area. We were served more tea and mango sticky rice, which was a really thoughtful and authentic touch, and a lovely way to end the spa experience.

Makkha Health & Spa Bangkok Prices & Value for Money

For an in hotel spa in Bangkok, the pricing felt very reasonable, especially considering the two hour treatment time, the quality of the therapists, and the overall experience. At approximately £63 & £51 for two treatments each, it represents excellent value.

Is Makkha Health & Spa Bangkok Worth Visiting? – Final Verdict

For an independent Bangkok hotel spa, Makkha Health & Spa exceeded our expectations. The staff were warm, professional, and attentive, the environment was spotlessly clean, and both treatments were genuinely excellent. It was that good we booked in again for further treatments on our return to Bangkok.

My only small suggestion would be offering a wider range of softer or blended scrub scents, as most of the current options were quite strong. That said, this is very much personal preference.

Overall, this was a fantastic spa experience, and we would absolutely book again if we were staying in Bangkok.
