Borneo Natural Sukau Bilit Resort – Deep in the Kinabatangan Jungle

Borneo Natural Sukau Bilit Resort – Deep in the Kinabatangan Jungle

The Borneo Natural Sukau Bilit Resort Borneo is located deep in the Kinabatangan jungle. This was a 2 night, 3 day jungle adventure, complete with daily excursions and all meals included.

You’ll be placed in a group of around 10–12 people, and this will be your crew for all excursions throughout the trip. Meals are served buffet style in a communal dining area, where long tables make it easy to sit together and share stories. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are generally enjoyed with the same group, creating a warm and social atmosphere. It’s a friendly and relaxed setup, perfect for connecting with fellow travellers from around the world and swapping highlights from your jungle adventures.

Accommodation is simple yet comfortable, set in separate rustic wooden buildings equipped with air conditioning, a welcome relief after jungle treks. Each room includes a comfy bed with a mosquito net, a hanging rail for clothes, and a private bathroom with a huge shower, toilet, and sink. You’ll also find thoughtful touches like a wall mounted hairdryer, fresh towels, and basic amenities such as soap, toothbrushes, and toothpaste. It’s everything you need for a restful stay in the heart of the jungle.

Early Morning Excursion and Jungle Trek

Each day began early, 5:15 AM, to be exact, with a strong black coffee to kick start the morning. We then headed out for a riverboat safari, and one of these rides turned into an unforgettable experience: we witnessed pygmy elephants crossing the river, a rare sight that reportedly happens only 9–10 times a year! We also spotted a rhino hornbill, proboscis monkeys, macaques, among countless other exotic species, so many in fact, that it’s hard to list them all.

After our river journey, it was time for breakfast followed by a jungle trek. Armed with leech socks, wellies, bug spray, and sun hats, we ventured into the thick of the rainforest. We found plenty of elephant tracks and fresh droppings, but thankfully didn’t come face to face with the notorious bull elephant known to charge (not sure I could’ve made a swift escape in wellies!).

Afternoons were wonderfully relaxed, giving us a chance to unwind after the early starts and wildlife packed mornings. Later in the day at 4PM, we’d hop back on the boat for the sunset river cruise, where we were treated to breathtaking scenery, an abundance of wildlife, and sunsets straight out of a postcard, all thanks to our incredible tour guide.

Once back on dry land, it was time for dinner and a well earned beer (note: alcohol isn’t included in the package and is payable locally in cash). An optional night jungle walk was also available. We chose to skip it, having already done a similar one in Sepilok.

Each night, the jungle truly came alive. We drifted off to the sounds of monkeys and, on one occasion, were startled by scratching on the walls in the early hours, thrilling and just a little bit unnerving!

Wildlife Wonders

The few days in the jungle was nothing short of phenomenal. We were lucky enough to spot Borneo’s Big 5, ticking off an unforgettable experience from our bucket list. Seeing elephants twice in two days, including an up close encounter,  was the ultimate highlight, especially since many other groups missed out.

Our final morning delivered a perfect send off: a crocodile gliding through the water and an orangutan sighting from the boat. Absolutely amazing!

Our Verdict

This was one of the best things we’ve ever done. A once in a lifetime adventure that brought us eye to eye with some of the world’s most incredible wildlife. Highly recommended for anyone craving a true jungle escape!

We stayed at the Tanini Resort in Sepilok for a night prior to starting this tour. This was a great place for a one night stopover as the mini bus for the Natural Sukau Bilit Resort can pick you up from Tanini. This journey is about 3 hours long.
