Ambong Ambong Langkawi – A luxurious rainforest escape! We were transported to the lush, serene paradise of Ambong Ambong Rainforest Retreat. Nestled within Langkawi’s tropical jungle, this boutique resort proved to be the dreamiest setting for my 50th birthday celebrations.
Arrival & Relaxation in the Canopy
After a warm welcome at check in, we were driven up the steep hillside to our suite, perched high among the treetops. The rainforest wrapped around us and the noise of monkeys swinging by in the trees.
Our first afternoon was spent exactly as I had hoped: unwinding on the balcony with a cup of tea and some complimentary chocolate brownies, soaking up the peaceful surroundings. The only interruptions were the playful antics of dusky leaf monkeys leaping through the canopy.

The Luxurious Suite
Well, what can I say? This must be one of the most breathtaking places we’ve ever stayed. Our suite at Ambong Ambong was a perfect blend of charm and luxury, beautifully designed to let the natural surroundings take centre stage.
The panoramic rainforest views stretch out to the Andaman Sea. Waking up to this lush, green canopy each morning was wonderful.
The suite itself was thoughtfully appointed with everything you could possibly want for a luxurious retreat:
- A stunning wooden bathtub on the balcony, ideal for a long, bubbly soak with a view
- A compact outdoor kitchen, with a fridge, for morning tea or sunset snacks
- A spacious bathroom featuring a giant glass walled rainforest shower, so you can feel truly immersed in nature, plus watch the monkeys swinging in the trees (although they may watch you too!)
- A romantic four poster bed dressed in crisp white linens
- Air conditioning, room service, and all the little touches that made our stay feel effortlessly indulgent

Every detail made this suite unforgettable. What a way to start the day… sipping tea on the balcony, watching the treetops sway and listening to the rainforest come alive. Pure magic!

Sunset Evening Indulgence
As the sun set, we treated ourselves to a relaxed and indulgent evening at Rimba, Ambong Ambong’s elegant forest view restaurant. The service was friendly and attentive. Pre-booking may be required as it can get busy at the weekends.
The evening featured:
- Handcrafted cocktails and refreshing G&Ts
- A sumptuous dinner of tender beef rendang and rich prawn udang masak lemak with sweet pineapple
- A glass of smooth French wine, the perfect accompaniment to a wonderful meal
They do have a lovely roof top bar area with stunning views, however this was not open while we stayed in Langkawi.

Bidding Farewell to My 40s
The final morning of my forties began with a wholesome vegan breakfast at Pegaga , the resort’s wellness inspired café. From our table, we had panoramic views of the forest canopy and beyond. It wasn’t long before we were joined by the curious monkeys and even a giant squirrel, Langkawi’s charming wildlife never far from sight.
Later, we set off for a walk along the beach into town. Though hot and sticky, the walk gave us the perfect excuse to explore the island’s famous duty free shops (and enjoy a much needed cold drink in an air conditioned shop).

Poolside Bliss & Korean Cuisine
Back at the resort, we sought shade and peace by the pool. Though small and intimate, it was the perfect escape from the midday heat. As expected in the tropics, a gentle rain shower soon arrived, but passed quickly. That evening, we strolled back into town for dinner at Haroo , a local Korean restaurant. The food was rich, spicy, and delicious. We ended the night with a nostalgic trip down memory lane at a bar playing classic ‘80s tunes, a great way to end another lovely evening.

A Special Birthday Celebration
My 50th birthday was nothing short of spectacular. The day began with a beautiful sunrise and breathtaking views, and a delicious breakfast at Rimba. Followed by a two hour massage at Amalaa Spa (see my review in a separate blog post). An afternoon by the pool and then back to our suite for a long soak in a bubble bath on the balcony, complete with champagne.

Dinner that evening was a culinary experience at Unkaizan, a highly regarded Japanese restaurant located just below the resort. A wonderful meal and full of flavour. The restaurant doesn’t open every day, so you will need to check times, plus you will need to book as it gets very busy. As we finished our meal, a dramatic tropical storm rolled in, luckily the friendly staff at Ambong Ambong were at hand to pick us up and transfer us back to our canopy sanctuary.

Saying Goodbye to a Luxurious Paradise
Our final morning at Ambong Ambong was a peaceful while we enjoyed breakfast and a few final encounters with our cheeky monkey friends. With our bags packed and a hire car waiting, we were ready to explore more of Langkawi. Driving on the same side as home is convenient, though dodging monkeys on the road added an extra challenge!
Final Thoughts – Ambong Ambong Langkawi
Ambong Ambong Rainforest Retreat provided the perfect balance of relaxation, indulgence, and adventure. Nestled within the lush rainforest, the resort offers:
- Suites, studios, cottages, and private pool villas, all with panoramic views over the Andaman Sea
- Two exceptional restaurants serving nourishing and indulgent cuisine
- A rooftop bar (temporarily closed during our visit)
- A holistic spa offering blissful treatments
One thing to note is that the resort is built on multiple levels up a very steep hill, with lots of steps. Fortunately, guests can request a lift in the resort’s car at any time, and the friendly team is always happy to assist. We made use of this service, as our suite was located at the very top of the resort!

Most memorable of all was the warmth and attentiveness of the Ambong Ambong team, who went above and beyond to ensure my milestone birthday was seamless and unforgettable.
Whether you’re planning a romantic escape, a solo retreat, or a special celebration like mine, Ambong Ambong is a destination that will leave you feeling recharged, inspired, and deeply connected to nature.
